Composition
ENGL 2010
This semester at SLCC was finally the chance that I got to get into English 2010 and let me say that it has a wonderful experience. Throughout the entire time that the class has been going on, we have written up three different genres or writing which were: profile, review, and position/proposal. The assignment was put all three of these papers together and then revise them ourselves, based upon suggestions from our professor, Mrs. Briggs. But here can be expected the original copies of my papers and the revised versions to see the difference in them. But there isn't too much between each because they were all well put together and just needed small changes or a few additions of wording.

FINAL PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
Writing! It is a very important aspect in our everyday lives that it helps so many people communicate their thoughts and ideas with the entire world. But more importantly, writing teaches how certain types of papers are drawn up and put together for a really great piece of work. Well through this entire semester in English 2010, I’ve learned so much about three different genres of writing which include profile, review, and proposal/position. Doing each one was an experience that I’ll never forget and even showed me the qualities that go into producing each style of writing for amazing papers. Just how did all this result in the creation of the profile on a famous war hero?
Throughout all of history there have been many wars all the way from the ancient Chinese to that of the American Revolution. This war came to be known as a very important part of U.S. history which resulted in Americans getting their independence and freedom from the tyranny of England. The British were well fed with power that they just went ahead and attack innocent people which eventually led to war. The war last for a long time until it ended with the defeat of Cornwallis in 1781. But all this wouldn’t have been possible due to the good qualities of an outstanding general that led the Continental Army to victory and his name is “George Washington.”
For my profile paper, George Washington was the main focus and then I talked about the virtues he used to help lead his army to success against the British in battle which were hope, faith, and courage. The message was that people today can too use these qualities to help them succeed in life. This came to me when I read the textbook on profiles and I felt it was a good idea to use battles in which Washington managed win then compare them to movies and books that demonstrate the keys to success. When I got my profile paper back I was fascinated with the outcome. The only concern made was the body paragraphs were too long and that reminded me to never make paragraphs in any paper very long, for then it’ll bore the reader out. This paper taught me how to send a message by talking about people or experiences but this isn’t the case with the next paper.
All the time there’s something new that’s created for people’s enjoyment and amusement that they just feel the need to experience it for themselves. Like for example a brand new hotel or even a whole new line of clothing catches someone’s attention. But the only problem holding them back is deciding whether or not it’s worth the time and money to go see it, so, what is their means of finding out? The answer is by looking up a “review” on the location or item of their interest. This was done for the bindings of some really huge metallic beings.
The second paper done throughout the semester was a review which I did on a book titled: Transformers Exodus. I chose this amazing story because I happened to be reading it at the time when the paper was assigned, but most importantly; this decision was based on my love for Transformers. My intentions for this review were to inform Transformer fans about a book that told the curious epic tale of how the war started between the Autobots and Decepticons by pointing out what Cybertron is like, characters involved, and shortening the story. I was fascinated with the grade received but when going through it, I found that I needed to put a little more of a review tone except that it was hard to figure out where to place it. That though wasn’t as hard as the very last paper.
Throughout this entire semester the first two papers were both very easy to put together but that wasn’t the case with the final position/proposal paper. I had the topic for this paper planned since day one in finding out what our last paper for the course would be and the basis was on animal conservation of wild cats (lions, tigers, bobcats, cheetahs). In the process of developing this paper, I was confused on how to structure it so I asked for advice from my professor Mrs. Briggs such as putting my position on the catastrophe’s facing each cat and then give a proposal to each problem. When I got the paper back I was surprised at the score at the grade earned, A-, for I had a little doubt about myself but it was nothing really. In making changes to this paper none were administered (except for the reference citations) at all for I stated my position in the beginning and demonstrated it by telling what solutions should really take place to preserve each cat (jaguar, tiger, and cheetah). Animals are such amazing pieces of nature. They provide everyone with meaning in their hearts which will hopefully get them the necessary protection to thrive with outstanding results just as what was achieved in this class.
Throughout the entire time spent in English 2010 I feel that I have indeed grasped the concepts and requirements in producing different genres of writing. The profile showed me that using present day examples in any paper is a great way to lead into what’s going to be discussed in the body. The review on the other hand really challenged me to be able to summarize a story without giving away much detail about it, for I’ve never been good at summarizing and even showed me what to look for in a review such as detail, description, and opinion. Lastly the position/proposal taught me that it takes a huge amount of research to formulate hard pieces of writing for the more evidence provided, the better the paper. This course has been an absolute delight to take and I’ve gained much knowledge all due to a glorious professor, Mrs. Briggs and I would like to express myself by saying, “Thank you for teaching me so much about writing!”
